JAMB Registrar Oloyede Debunks Misconceptions About Jihad in Islam

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, has addressed widespread misconceptions surrounding the concept of Jihad in Islam.

Speaking at the first International Conference organized by Fountain University and the Nasfat Missionary Institute (NMI), Prof. Oloyede emphasized that Jihad is rooted in peacebuilding and encompasses various constructive efforts, including preaching, teaching, and acts of kindness. These actions, he explained, are guided by Islamic principles and aim to seek divine approval.

“Jihad is not about violence or coercion. It involves noble endeavors to uplift society, such as empowering the youth to be self-reliant rather than dependent,” he stated.

The conference, held at the Fountain University campus, revolved around the theme ‘Navigating the Dynamics of Religion, Politics, Ethnicity, and Youth for Peace and Development.’ Oloyede underscored the critical role of peace in fostering societal development, advocating for strategies derived from Islamic principles to promote harmony and unity.

Represented by Prof. Ibrahim Uthman of the University of Ibadan’s Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Oloyede stressed that Jihad serves as a tool for empowering the youth and ensuring societal progress.

“Islamic teachings reveal that the best form of Jihad is related to peacebuilding. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught that the greatest Jihad is speaking the truth before a tyrant. Contrary to the misconception of Jihad as ‘holy war,’ it primarily refers to peaceful striving in the cause of God. Muslim youth, in particular, are encouraged to strive for economic independence and contribute positively to society,” he explained.

Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Prof. Ramota Karim, also highlighted the conference’s objective to foster intellectual and spiritual growth while addressing pressing global challenges. She emphasized the importance of collaborative research grounded in Islamic ethics and universal values to achieve peace and sustainable development.

This conference has brought renewed clarity to the often-misunderstood concept of Jihad, steering its narrative towards peace, empowerment, and societal upliftment.
