I Wrote UTME Many Times for Medicine at UI, OAU, but Ended Up with Biochemistry at Bowen — Clinton Akanbi, Bowen’s Best-Graduating Student

Clinton Ayodeji Akanbi of the Department of Biochemistry emerged as the overall best-graduating student of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, for the 2023/2024 academic session with an impressive Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.99 on a scale of 5.0. In an exclusive interview, Clinton shared his academic journey, marked by resilience, determination, and unwavering focus.

Clinton revealed that his journey began with multiple attempts at the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as he pursued his dream of studying Medicine. Despite scoring 249 in his first attempt for admission to the University of Ibadan (UI) and 273 in subsequent attempts for Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), he narrowly missed the cutoff marks. He continued to write the UTME, scoring 301 and 304 in two final attempts, yet the dream of studying Medicine remained elusive. On his final attempt, a scheduling conflict with a physics test at OAU prevented him from attending his post-UTME examination at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).

Faced with these setbacks, Clinton decided to focus on completing his Biochemistry programme. After spending four years at OAU, where he managed to complete two years of coursework due to prolonged academic strikes, he transferred to Bowen University at the 300 level. At Bowen, he completed both 100-level and 200-level courses during summer sessions to meet academic requirements. His determination and academic discipline paid off as he graduated with top honors.

Reflecting on his decision to transfer to Bowen, Clinton highlighted the stability and structured academic calendar at the institution. He emphasized that Bowen provided a supportive learning environment, free from the frequent disruptions he had faced at OAU. According to him, Bowen’s approach to education combines academic rigor with character development, which played a significant role in his success.

When asked about the secret to his academic excellence, Clinton attributed his success to discipline, hard work, and a structured approach to learning. He also acknowledged the unwavering support of his family and his deep faith in God, which kept him focused during challenging times.

Clinton faced several challenges during his academic journey, particularly the adjustment required after transferring to a new institution. He noted that building relationships with his lecturers and leveraging Bowen’s support systems helped him overcome these obstacles.

In comparing Bowen University with public institutions such as OAU, UI, and UNILAG, Clinton acknowledged that while public universities offer larger academic communities and rich research opportunities, private institutions like Bowen excel in personalized mentorship, academic stability, and modern teaching methods.

Addressing the relevance of his course, Clinton emphasized the critical role of Biochemistry in healthcare, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental sustainability. He expressed hope that Nigeria would prioritize education funding, improve infrastructure, and create policies to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

Clinton offered advice to undergraduates, urging them to stay focused, manage their time effectively, seek help when needed, and build strong relationships with their lecturers and peers.

In conclusion, Clinton’s story serves as a testament to resilience and determination. Despite facing numerous setbacks, he remained focused on his goals, ultimately emerging as Bowen University’s best-graduating student. His journey is an inspiration to countless students striving to overcome academic and personal challenges in pursuit of excellence.
