At 24, Aduragbemi Adefi has emerged as one of the shining stars of the First Technical University (Tech-U) in Ibadan, graduating with a first-class degree in Microbiology and a stellar CGPA of 4.73/5.00. Her inspiring academic journey highlights resilience, determination, and the power of family support as she overcame significant financial challenges to achieve her dreams.
The Road to Academic Excellence
Aduragbemi’s journey to first-class honors was not an easy one. After completing secondary school, she faced financial constraints that delayed her university education. Despite her dreams of studying Medicine, she missed out on her preferred programs due to cut-off marks and eventually landed a scholarship to study Microbiology.
“Microbiology wasn’t my initial choice, but it was the only available course under the scholarship. My family couldn’t afford tuition fees, so I had to grab the opportunity. I gave my best, and God crowned my efforts,” she said.
Balancing Challenges with Determination
During her undergraduate years, Aduragbemi encountered tough courses like Principles of Parasitology and Advanced Food Microbiology, which pushed her to her limits. Despite the challenges, she relied on a combination of strategic preparation, teamwork with friends, and unwavering faith.
“It wasn’t easy. I had to prepare with past questions, mid-semester topics, and assignments. Some courses were unpredictable, but I handed my fears to God and did my best. To God be the glory, I got an A,” she shared.
Aduragbemi also highlighted the importance of personalized learning. “I didn’t follow the crowd. I found what worked for me and stuck to it. Whether it was choosing courses or study methods, I did what aligned with my strengths,” she noted.
Inspiration from Family and Mentors
Her father, a staunch believer in education, was her greatest motivator. “My dad loves education but couldn’t further his own studies due to financial constraints. I wanted to make him proud and give him the joy of having a child graduate with a first class,” she said.
She also credited her academic success to the prayers and support of her parents, friends, and mentors, including professors and lecturers who encouraged her throughout her journey.
Navigating Financial Hardships
Aduragbemi’s family relied on farming for their livelihood, and finances were often tight. Her father went the extra mile to secure a scholarship for her, which covered tuition and allowed her to pursue her studies.
“During tough times, my dad would ask if I needed anything, but I didn’t want to burden him when things were difficult at home. I’m grateful he found the scholarship opportunity for me. It changed my life,” she recounted.
Balancing Academics and Leadership
In addition to excelling academically, Aduragbemi juggled leadership roles, including serving as the Public Relations Officer for the Baptist Students’ Fellowship and the Treasurer for the Unified Campus Christian Fellowship. These commitments stretched her thin at times, but she remained steadfast in her studies.
“Mid-semester results weren’t looking good during my final year because of the extra responsibilities, but God crowned my efforts, and I pulled through,” she said.
Future Plans: A Global Vision
Aduragbemi is now focused on securing scholarships for a master’s degree in Public Health or Epidemiology, a field she is deeply passionate about. Her ultimate goal is to contribute to global health, particularly in researching disease outbreaks and creating healthier communities.
“Microbiology plays a critical role in addressing pandemics, food security, and environmental conservation. I want to specialize further and contribute my quota to creating a better health system globally,” she explained.
Reflections and Advice to Aspiring Students
Reflecting on her journey, Aduragbemi shared a significant life lesson: “A smile doesn’t mean the absence of pain. People are in pain yet learn to smile through situations.”
To students aspiring to graduate with first-class honors, she advised, “Find what works for you. Don’t copy others blindly. Most importantly, include God in your plans. He makes all the difference.”
