According to the commission, this decision aligns with global best practices for training professionals in these disciplines. It aims to ensure that certificates issued by Nigerian universities meet international standards, facilitating harmonization, mutual recognition, and global competitiveness.

“The upgrade enhances the employability and further academic opportunities of Nigerian graduates in these fields, ensuring their qualifications are comparable to those obtained globally,” the statement read.

Program Duration Extended

To accommodate the additional courses and clinical training, the duration of Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, and Optometry programs has been extended from five years to six years. This adjustment reflects the need for more rigorous academic and clinical preparation to meet the demands of the profession.

Clarification on Medical Laboratory Science

The NUC also addressed the Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science (DMLS) program, clarifying that it does not exist in its Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) or Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS). Consequently, the program is not approved or recognized in any Nigerian university.

The commission emphasized that Medical Laboratory Science programs offered in Nigeria must adhere to the officially approved curriculum and standards.

A Step Toward Academic Excellence

The upgrade of these programs marks a significant step forward in the development of higher education in Nigeria. It ensures that graduates in these fields are better prepared to meet global professional standards and excel in their careers. With these changes, Nigerian universities are set to produce highly trained professionals who can compete internationally and contribute meaningfully to the healthcare sector.
