FCT, Abuja – Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has advised Nigerian students on the best university courses to study for long-term relevance and career success.
Omokri, who served under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, stated that many university courses are becoming obsolete and no longer align with modern industry demands. He emphasized that students should pursue degrees that provide strong career prospects and a high return on investment in terms of time and tuition fees.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, @renoomokri, on Monday, November 18, Omokri listed courses he believes will remain relevant in the future. He noted that these fields offer the best career outcomes and advised students to focus on them for better job prospects and financial security.
Courses Omokri Recommended
According to Omokri, the following degree programs remain valuable:
- Accounting
- Actuarial Science
- Agriculture
- Anatomy
- Architecture
- Banking and Finance
- Business
- Communications
- Cybersecurity
- Dentistry
- Economics
- Education
- Engineering (all fields)
- Geology
- Geophysics
- Marketing
- Mathematics
- Nursing
- Psychology/Psychiatry
- Science (Medicine, Physics, and Chemistry-based courses)
- Technology (Robotics, Aeronautics, IT, AI, and Digital technologies)
Why Omokri Believes Some Courses Are Outdated
Omokri argued that many universities continue to offer outdated courses that no longer meet industry demands. He cited research from the Pew Institute, which found that some institutions retain obsolete programs solely to generate income.
He further noted that even top universities like Oxford and Cambridge have begun shutting down outdated departments that no longer provide value in today’s job market.
“These are relevant degree courses up to tomorrow. From a cost-benefit analysis point of view, they offer the best successful outcomes against time and money spent in a university. I may have missed one or two. But not much,” he wrote.
Controversy Over “Useless” University Courses
Omokri’s remarks align with a recent debate over the relevance of certain degree programs in Nigeria. A Nigerian social media user, Brooda John, sparked reactions after listing some university courses as “useless” for Nigerian students.
Among the courses he criticized were:
- Law
- Microbiology
- Biochemistry
- Agriculture
- Sociology
- Political Science
- Business Administration
- English Language
According to Brooda John, these courses lack strong job prospects in Nigeria, making them less desirable for students seeking employment after graduation.
The Debate on Relevant University Degrees
The discussion on useful and obsolete courses remains a hot topic in Nigeria’s education and job market. While some argue that all degrees have value, others believe that students should focus on career fields that offer strong employment opportunities.
As more universities globally begin to adjust their academic programs, many are calling on Nigerian institutions to do the same and offer courses that align with modern job market trends.
What do you think about Omokri’s list? Should Nigerian universities phase out outdated courses or continue to offer them?
