The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), held the 6th Induction of Graduating Engineering Students & Award Ceremony alongside the 5th Professor Chinedu Nebo Faculty Lecture Series. Themed Engineering Entrepreneurship: A Pathway to Economic Independence for Nigerian Youth, the event took place on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at the Faculty of Engineering Hall, Ikole campus.
FUOYE Vice-Chancellor’s Address
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Abayomi Fasina, was the Dean of Agriculture, Professor Samuel Olusegun Adeyemi. In his speech, Professor Fasina emphasized resilience, integrity, and ethical practice as key principles for the new engineers. He urged them to uphold these values and represent FUOYE with dignity and professionalism as they embark on their careers.
Induction of 641 Engineering Graduates
The ceremony saw the induction of 641 graduates from seven departments within FUOYE’s Faculty of Engineering. Welcoming participants, the Dean of Engineering, Engineer (Professor) Olaitan Akinsanmi, praised the institution’s efforts in producing outstanding engineers who have excelled both locally and internationally.
“It is always a unique event as it ushers in the convocation ceremony of this prestigious university. Our Faculty has produced young men and women who are doing great exploits within and outside the shores of the country. Our graduates are doing us proud,” he remarked. He also expressed gratitude to Vice-Chancellor Fasina for his continued support of the faculty.
COREN President’s Remarks
President of COREN, Engr. Professor Sadiq Z. Abubakar FNSE, FAEng, represented by COREN Council Member and Southwest Regional Representative, Engr. Folasade O. Adebayo FNSE, FNICE, ACArb, spoke on the importance of engineering education in Nigeria.
“There are nearly seventy universities offering engineering education with over twenty-three different programs. If managed diligently, this robust resource can produce at least 10,000 engineering graduates per academic session,” she stated.
She assured the university administration of COREN’s commitment to maintaining the Washington Accord Benchmark for universities and the Sydney Accord Benchmark for polytechnics in Nigeria. She further encouraged continued participation in training, accreditation, and other quality assurance activities to ensure the highest educational standards.
Strengthening Academia-Industry Collaboration
The COREN President highlighted the need for synergy between academia and industry, advocating for the triple-helix principle of sabbatical leave for faculty members in industries and adjunct appointments of industry leaders in universities. This, she said, would help bridge skill gaps and enhance industry-oriented training for students.
Administering of Oath & Keynote Lectures
A significant highlight of the event was the oath-taking ceremony for the newly inducted pupil engineers, signifying their official entry into the profession.
In addition to the induction, notable lectures were delivered by key industry stakeholders, including Engineer Tope Fatukas, Technical Adviser to the Ekiti State Governor, and Mr. Femi Owoye, Editor/CEO of Motoring World International Nigeria.
The event was well-attended by distinguished guests, faculty members, and proud family members, marking yet another milestone in FUOYE’s commitment to engineering excellence and professional development.
