The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reiterated that the National Identification Number (NIN) is a mandatory requirement for all candidates registering for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
According to JAMB’s latest weekly bulletin, released on Monday, February 24, 2025, NIN is the first and most essential requirement for any prospective candidate seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The Ogun State JAMB Coordinator, Hakeem AbdulHameed, reaffirmed this stance while addressing a delegation from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Abeokuta Study Centre.
Why NIN is Crucial for UTME Registration
AbdulHameed emphasized that candidates must obtain their NIN to generate a profile code, a vital step in the registration process. To create the profile code, applicants must send an SMS with “NIN” in capital letters, followed by a space and their 11-digit NIN, to either of JAMB’s official USSD codes: 55019 or 66019.
He further explained that this measure is designed to protect candidates’ personal data and prevent fraudulent activities, ensuring a secure and transparent registration process. He also stressed that whether a candidate is applying for a regular or non-regular programme—such as part-time, distance learning, or sandwich programmes—admission must be documented by JAMB.
JAMB’s Stance on Data Security and Biometric Verification
During the visit, the NOUN Abeokuta Study Centre Director, Professor Oyekunle Oluwayemisi Adegboyega, commended JAMB for implementing strict data security measures. He highlighted that NOUN also upholds high standards of data integrity, ensuring that only students with verified credentials are issued certificates.
In line with its commitment to a transparent examination process, JAMB warned that candidates who fail biometric verification on the exam day will be barred from taking the UTME or the mock test. Additionally, the board maintained that parents or proxies are strictly prohibited from making transactions on candidates’ profiles to avoid data mismatches and irregularities.
As the UTME registration deadline approaches, JAMB urges all prospective candidates to obtain their NIN and adhere strictly to the registration guidelines to ensure a seamless and hitch-free admission process.
