The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has addressed public concern surrounding the scoring system for candidates who are absent during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), stating that such candidates will not receive a zero score.
In an interview with Punch, JAMB spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, explained that candidates who fail to show up for the exam will not have their result listed at all, rather than being assigned a score of zero. According to him, assigning a zero to absent candidates could send a wrong signal to institutions and the public, suggesting that the candidate wrote the exam but performed poorly.
“Someone who didn’t take the exam can’t be awarded zero. That would mean we assessed you and you failed, which isn’t the case. So when a candidate is absent, we simply record it as ‘ABSENT’ — no score is released for such individuals,” Benjamin stated.
This clarification comes in response to speculation and social media discussions suggesting that candidates who are absent during the UTME would receive a score of zero, potentially affecting their chances of future admission or creating data confusion.
JAMB also reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair admission process. The board encourages candidates to take their exams seriously and to ensure timely registration and participation in all examination procedures.
With the 2025 UTME fast approaching, candidates are advised to prepare thoroughly, show up for their exams, and comply with all examination guidelines.
