The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that only 420,415 candidates scored 200 and above in the just-concluded 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This figure represents just 21.5% of the total 1,955,069 candidates who sat for the exam.

According to the official statistics released by JAMB, the majority of candidates performed below this commonly used benchmark for securing admission into competitive university courses in Nigeria. The breakdown of the scores paints a clearer picture:

  • Only 4,756 candidates scored 320 and above
  • Only 7,658 scored between 300 and 319
  • 734,41 scored between 250 and 299
  • 334,560 scored between 200 and 249

This means that over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200, highlighting the intense competition and the academic challenges many students still face in the country’s education system.

  • 24.97% (488,197 candidates) scored 140–159
  • Only 0.63% (12,414 candidates) scored 300 and above
  • Candidates who scored below 100 are 2,031, which is 0.10% of the total.

JAMB also noted that:

  • 40,247 underage candidates participated, but only 467 (1.16%) met the exceptional score threshold.
  • 71,701 candidates were marked absent.
  • 97 candidates were involved in confirmed exam malpractice cases.
  • 2,157 others are under investigation.
  • Results for blind and JEOG candidates are still being processed.

Candidates who scored above 200 now face the next phase of their admission journey: waiting for institutions to announce their cut-off marks and begin the Post-UTME screening process.
