The Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) has officially matriculated 2,229 students for the 2023/2024 academic session, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s continued expansion. The matriculation ceremony, held at the university’s Convocation Square, saw students take the Matriculation Oath, officially recognizing them as members of the 12-year-old institution.
Expansion into Health Sciences
Among the newly admitted students, 343 have been enrolled in the recently established College of Health Sciences. This college offers programs in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS), Nursing Sciences, Dental Sciences, Physiotherapy, and Dietetics. The introduction of these programs reflects FUGUS’s commitment to addressing healthcare delivery gaps in Northwest Nigeria.
Vice-Chancellor’s Address
During his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor M.G. Abubakar, congratulated the new students on their successful admission. He urged them to be security-conscious while on campus and to report any suspicious activities to security authorities. He also warned against engaging in examination malpractice, cultism, sexual harassment, and drug abuse, emphasizing that these vices attract severe penalties as outlined in the Student Handbook.
Support from Student Affairs
The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Mu’awiyya Umar Ladan, commended the Vice-Chancellor for his steadfast support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the matriculation exercise. His remarks reinforced the university’s dedication to student welfare and a structured academic environment.

The event witnessed the presence of prominent stakeholders, including university management, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Deans of Faculties, Directors, Heads of Departments and Units, traditional rulers, parents, and students. The ceremony also featured poetry recitations and drama performances emphasizing the importance of unity in diversity.
