President Tinubu Signs Bills for Two New Universities in Osun and Ekiti States

On Thursday in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu signed two crucial bills establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

In his statement, President Tinubu emphasized that these specialized institutions were designed to meet the growing educational needs of the country. He highlighted their role in fostering research, innovation, and contributing to Nigeria’s overall economic growth and development. These universities will focus on developing professionals in the fields of agriculture, science, and technology, providing Nigeria with the opportunity to strengthen its position in the global economy.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) reported that Nigeria currently has 63 approved federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities. This new development marks an important step in expanding Nigeria’s higher education system, offering more opportunities for students pursuing careers in critical sectors.

In addition to the new universities, President Tinubu also approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town, Tai, Rivers State, on February 3, 2025. Furthermore, the President approved the Federal Government’s takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, which will now be converted into a federal university.

This strategic investment in higher education reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s educational infrastructure and ensuring that the country’s youth are well-equipped to meet the demands of the modern world.
