The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, is set to graduate 16,409 students at its 55th convocation ceremony. Among the graduands are two exceptional students, Damilare Adebakin and Samuel Badekale, from the Department of Cell Biology & Genetics, who will graduate with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0.
Announcing the milestone, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, highlighted the outstanding achievement of the two best-graduating students during a statement issued on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. “The overall best-graduating student position is shared by two students, Damilare Adebakin and Samuel Badekale, from the Faculty of Science, Department of Cell Biology & Genetics, with a perfect score of 5.0,” she said.
Breakdown of Graduands
The Vice-Chancellor provided a detailed breakdown of the graduands:
- First degrees and diplomas: 9,684 students
- Postgraduate degrees: 6,659 students
- UNILAG Business School: 66 students
The convocation ceremonies will take place from January 14 to January 16, 2025, with postgraduate degrees and diplomas being conferred on the final day.
Honorary Degrees for Eminent Nigerians
UNILAG will also confer honorary degrees of Doctor of Science on three distinguished Nigerians:
- Fola Adeola, Co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank
- Engr. Kolawole Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group
- Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization
Convocation Schedule
The 55th convocation will kick off with a Jumaat service on Friday, January 10, and conclude with a thanksgiving service on Sunday, January 17, 2025.

In a related development, UNILAG has closed its 2024/2025 admission exercise. The university urged candidates to accept transfer offers via the JAMB CAPS portal by January 10, 2025, warning that failure to do so would result in forfeiture of admission.
