A JAMB candidate, Peter, has expressed deep concern over what he described as high levels of lateness by fellow candidates scheduled to write their UTME exam as early as 6:30AM.
In his words:
“High level of lateness. Candidates whose exams start by 6:30AM are coming to the center by 8 o’clock.”
His observation highlights a growing issue that has been reported across several centres: early-batch candidates arriving hours after their scheduled time — sometimes after the exam has already begun or ended.

Why This Matters
The 6:30AM time slot is the earliest of the day, introduced to accommodate more candidates and ensure smoother scheduling nationwide. However, arriving late for a time-sensitive exam like UTME can:
- Disrupt the CBT centre’s flow
- Lead to disqualification or missed exams
- Affect other candidates who came on time
In some cases, centres may refuse to let in latecomers, especially when sessions are already underway.
What May Be Causing the Lateness?
Several reasons could be responsible for the high rate of lateness:

- Distance to the CBT centre, especially if candidates were posted to unfamiliar locations
- Poor transportation options in the early morning hours
- Candidates underestimating how early they need to arrive
But regardless of the challenges, candidates are strongly advised to be at their centres at least 1 hour before the scheduled time, especially for early slots.
What Candidates Should Do
If your exam is scheduled for 6:30AM in the coming days, here are a few tips:
- Plan your route a day before the exam
- Visit the centre in advance if you’re not sure of the location
- Leave home by 4:30AM or earlier, especially if your centre is far
- Avoid any distractions or delays that could cost you the entire exam
