JAMB 2025: Candidate Shares Mixed Experience After Writing Day 1 UTME

The 2025 UTME officially kicked off on Thursday, April 24, across CBT centres nationwide. While many candidates walked into the halls hopeful and well-prepared, not everyone walked out with the same energy. For some, it was a smooth ride; for others, the experience left them worried about the outcome.

One such candidate, Odonwodo Precious, who wrote her UTME on the first day, took to our platform to share her honest opinion.

“I wrote mine yesterday,” she said. “What can I say? It was somehow easy, especially English — but the rest… nah, red flag.”

Her statement reflects what many other students have also reported — that while Use of English was generally fair, other subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and even Government posed major challenges. Some found the questions unusually wordy or confusing, while others struggled with time management.

English Was Manageable for Many

From Precious’ comment, and what we’ve seen from dozens of others, English seemed to be the easiest subject for most candidates. Comprehension passages were mostly narrative, summary passages weren’t too long, and familiar topics like antonyms, synonyms, registers, and lexis and structure featured prominently.

Still, the wording of some questions required focus, and a few candidates said the instruction format confused them in sections like Sentence Interpretation and Cloze Test.

But Other Subjects Raised Concerns

For other papers, particularly the sciences, students weren’t as confident. Some reported that questions were more application-based than direct. Others mentioned that formulas were not provided and that the JAMB calculator lacked certain functions, which made calculations harder.

Precious summed up this feeling with her final statement:

“The rest… nah, red flag.”

This echoes a general concern among many who felt caught off guard by the way the questions were set — not because they didn’t study, but because the format felt different from mock exams and past questions.
