A few candidates, including Ongharaka Success, have reported receiving a message from JAMB that reads:
“2025 UTME Result: Underage and Underperformed.”
If you received this message after sending “UTMERESULT” to 55019 (or 66019), you may be confused or even worried. Here’s what it means — and what you should know moving forward.
What Does “Underage and Underperformed” Mean?
This message means two things:
1. Underage
JAMB has confirmed that candidates must be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2025, to be eligible for admission into any Nigerian university or tertiary institution.
If you were below 16 as of that date, you are classified as underage, even if you took the exam.
However, JAMB made a special exception this year: over 40,000 underage candidates were allowed to take the UTME for learning and performance purposes only. It does not guarantee admission.
2. Underperformed
JAMB had a benchmark for underage candidates to prove “exceptional ability.” If you scored below the required threshold (usually around 280–300), JAMB may flag your result as “underperformed” — meaning your score didn’t meet the level that would allow further evaluation despite your age status.
So in simple terms, your message means:
- You are not yet 16 years old (as required by JAMB’s policy)
- Your UTME score is not high enough to be considered for any exceptional admission consideration
Can You Still Get Admission?
Unfortunately, no — not this year.
JAMB has clearly stated that candidates below 16 cannot be offered admission into any institution in Nigeria unless they meet all three of the following:
- They are at least 16 years old by September 30, 2025
- They score 280 or above in UTME
- They perform excellently in WAEC/NECO and post-UTME, if applicable
If you didn’t meet these conditions, you will need to wait until you’re of age and try again next year.
What Should You Do Now?
- Don’t panic — You’ve gained valuable experience that will help you perform even better next time.
- Focus on your WAEC/NECO exams if you’re still in secondary school.
- Prepare early for JAMB 2026, and by then, you’ll be fully eligible for admission.
Final Words
Receiving “Underage and Underperformed” doesn’t mean you’re not intelligent. It simply means you’re a bit early in the system and will have a better shot next year when you meet all the requirements.

My jamb question were not complete due to technical difficulties and we told the supervisor and they told us to attempt the rest.

This isn’t fair at all. Those who received the message underaged and underperformed don’t even get to see their scores. Some of us who are underaged will be 16 by October, November or even December.
Why do others who are born before that time given an opportunity. We who fall under those other months didn’t pray for it. We didn’t want to fall under that category but we are are criticized.
I have a question. Those who the jamb board call of age what requirements do they meet to be classified as “of age”. Most of those who are of age didn’t even get up to their cut off marks. Or is it that they regard them as responsible. I believe in this era age doesn’t define if an individual is responsible or not. So if they could tell me why they are regarded as of age I would shut up.
At the very least they should allow us see our results some of us here could have gotten up to 280,290,or even 300 but we are not regarded because of “age”.
If the boards don’t know if they should go on survey to secondary schools they will notice that those who perform excellently in school are those who are very young. Those who are older are not even part of the best top 20 in the schools.
Our parents also paid for the jamb others get to see their results and we don’t.
Please we shouldn’t be ignored. We are human beings and should be very well regarded by the society at large.

Some of the students that experienced technical glitch in Use of English during their exam where 10 questions were not given comprehension but only the options tend to score high. My question is are those questions given to them as bonus?

How will I know where to improve on. An underage candidate that got 290 and another underage candidate that got 160 are both ‘underperformed’. I just need to see my result and know where to work harder next time
