JAMB Marking Scheme 2025
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) administers Nigeria’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), a standardized exam required for admission into tertiary institutions such as universities and polytechnics.
The marking scheme for the UTME is designed to be objective and fair, with a maximum score of 400 points. The exam consists of four subjects, each worth 100 points. The four subjects are English, mathematics, one of the sciences (physics, chemistry, or biology), and one social science (government, economics, commerce, or geography).
The scores from all four subjects are added together to determine a candidate’s overall score, which is then used to determine eligibility for admission into various tertiary institutions.

JAMB Marking Scheme/System: How UTME is Marked English and Other Subjects: Everything you need to Know to Pass JAMB Examination

I have read a series of confusing posts on this topic before researching it and coming up with something very official. I contacted JAMB officials/Admin and the syllabus before I put this down. So, be rest assured that nothing is left out in this post. Yet, I make it as concise as possible for you.
I will break things down by subjects.
1. JAMB Method Used to Mark/Score English in UTME
Use of English is 60 questions in all. This means JAMB will set 60 English questions for all candidates irrespective of their proposed university courses.
But this doesn’t mean that the total score for the Use of English is 60 marks in all. In fact, it’s 100 marks for this compulsory subject.

2. JAMB Method Used to Mark Other Three Subjects UTME
Since you have other three subjects apart from English, below is the official marking scheme for them.
JAMB sets 40 questions each for the other subjects. Each of these questions is graded or scored 2.5 marks. Hence, the three subjects = 300 marks (i.e 40 x 2.5 x 3 subjects). In other words, each of the three other subjects will be 100 if marked 2.5 (40 x 2.5).
The Calculation for Each of the Other Subjects
If you score 35 over 40 in each of Chemistry, Physics, and Biology (for example), JAMB concludes with this calculation: 25 x 2.5 = 63% (in percentage). This is 25/40 in %.
Let’s assume the same in the other two subjects. Each of the other two gives you 63%.
Finally, your UTME score will be: 75 + 63 + 63 + 63 = That’s 264 over 400.
Conclusion
In the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, candidates are scored based on the number of correct answers they provide. For each correct answer, a candidate is awarded one mark. There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so it is advisable for candidates to attempt all questions even if they are unsure of the correct answer.
The total marks a candidate scores in the JAMB examination are used to determine their overall score, which is known as the JAMB score. The JAMB score is used to determine a candidate’s eligibility for admission to a university or other higher education institution in Nigeria.
It is important to note that the JAMB score is only one factor that is taken into consideration when determining a candidate’s eligibility for admission. Other factors, such as the candidate’s performance in the school-based component of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the cut-off marks set by the institution the candidate is applying to, also play a role in the admission process.
