Jubril Ojedele Shares His Journey to Academic Excellence

Lagos, Nigeria – Achieving a first-class degree is a remarkable feat, and for Jubril Ojedele, a graduate of Civil Engineering from the University of Ibadan, the journey was fueled by resilience, strategic planning, and a passion for knowledge. Hailing from Oyo town in Oyo State, the 25-year-old credits his late father’s encouragement and his own dedication to teaching classmates as key factors in his success.

A Father’s Influence on Academic Drive

Jubril acknowledges that his late father, Alhaji Ismail Ojedele, played a significant role in shaping his academic aspirations.

“My father was a staunch advocate for academic excellence. He consistently motivated me to strive for the highest grades, and I saw obtaining a first-class degree as a personal achievement that would make him proud,” he shared.

The Path to Civil Engineering

Interestingly, Civil Engineering was not Jubril’s childhood dream, but as he explored the field, he realized its potential to address global challenges and contribute to infrastructure development.

“As I delved deeper into Civil Engineering, I saw how impactful it was, and it became a fulfilling pursuit,” he explained.

Study Strategies and Overcoming Challenges

Many assume first-class graduates spend endless hours studying. While Jubril was a voracious reader in his first three years, his approach evolved in his final year due to various commitments.

“I read ahead of my peers because I needed to assist my classmates who were struggling. Teaching others helped reinforce my own understanding and contributed to my success,” he noted.

Jubril also emphasized that understanding the academic system at UI was crucial.

“I studied the system and adapted to it. I also relied on prayers, tenacity, and smart work. These strategies, combined with a resilient mindset, enabled me to excel.”

Academic Achievements and Recognition

Jubril was not the only high achiever in his class—eleven of his classmates also graduated with first-class degrees, marking a record-breaking achievement for the department.

“We call ourselves Optimus Omnium (Best of All) because we made history in the department,” he said proudly.

He also received over 12 awards for his academic performance, including the Most Outstanding Student in Academic Excellence at the 15th Outstanding Award of Junior Chambers International Nigeria, University of Ibadan.

Balancing Academics and Extracurricular Activities

Despite his rigorous academic schedule, Jubril actively participated in various university groups. He was a member of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, served as the Public Relations Officer of his departmental association, and contributed to the EcoVanguard Club UI.

“I was involved in multiple activities, but I ensured they didn’t interfere with my primary goal of academic success,” he explained.

Aspirations and Plans for the Future

With his degree in hand, Jubril is currently preparing applications for graduate school while gaining industry experience. He hopes to pursue a PhD and establish a thriving construction firm with his peers.

“In a few years, I want to be an accomplished engineer, contributing positively to society. I also look forward to building a happy family,” he said.

Advice for Students and Graduates

Jubril acknowledges the job market challenges but believes that securing employment requires a combination of skills, connections, and the right mindset.

“There are limited job opportunities, but with the right values and capabilities, one can find a befitting job. Students should focus on their academic strengths while also building skills that will make them competitive in the workforce.”

As he looks toward the future, Jubril remains committed to making a difference in civil engineering through sustainable and community-focused solutions, ensuring his work benefits both society and the environment.
