Choosing a course or school during JAMB registration can feel like a final decision. But in reality, you’re allowed to change your course or institution before or after the UTME — and sometimes, it’s the smartest move you can make.
If you’re not sure whether to stick with your original choices, here are some important reasons why you might consider making a change now, even before the main exam.

1. You Chose the Wrong Subject Combination
This is one of the most common reasons students make a change. If you discover after registering that your subject combination doesn’t match the requirements for your course, you may be denied admission, no matter how high your score is.
It’s safer to switch to a course that matches your current subject combination or correct it if the portal is still open.
2. Your Preferred School Has a High Cut-Off
If your mock result or practice scores show you may not reach the cut-off mark of the school you chose, and you’re worried about wasting a year, switching to a school with a lower cut-off might be a better option. Many great universities and polytechnics offer strong programs with more flexible requirements.
This is not about giving up — it’s about playing smart and increasing your chances.
3. Your Interests Have Changed
Sometimes after studying and attending tutorials, you may realise your passion has shifted. Maybe you registered for Engineering but now you feel more confident in Mass Communication. It’s better to study a course you are truly interested in than one you no longer connect with.
Changing your course early gives you time to adjust your study plan and focus on the right subjects.
4. You Want to Move Closer to Home or Reduce Costs
Location matters. If the school you picked is too far, or too expensive to live near, changing to a school closer to home can reduce stress, travel, and living costs. Many students switch for this reason — especially when they get more information about school fees, accommodation, or family situations.
5. You Were Misguided During Registration
Some students register under pressure or based on what friends or agents told them. Later, they discover they picked the wrong course or a school they didn’t fully understand. If that’s your case, now is the time to fix it.
Final Words
It’s not too late to make a better decision. JAMB allows you to change your course or school when the portal opens, and it’s best to do it based on research, not fear.
If you’re unsure about your current choices, take time now to look into other options. Check the required subjects, cut-off marks, school reputation, and location.
Your future is in your hands, and it’s okay to make changes — especially if they give you a better chance at success.
